This dam is a part of Panniyar Hydro Electric project and the location of the dam site is at Ponmudi. The Ponmudi reservoir is created by constructing a dam at Ponmudi across Panniyar river. The project is in Mudirapuzha basin, a sub basin of Periyar river basin. The water from Ponmudi reservoir is diverted through a water conductor system to Panniyar Power station (32 MW) located on the left bank of Mudirapuzha. After generating power, the water is released to Panniyar river itself.
