The Lower Periyar dam is a part of the Lower Periyar Hydro Electric Project The reservoir of the Lower Periyar Hydro Electric Project (LPHEP) is created by constructing a dam at Pambla across Periyar river. The inflow of Lower Periyar (LP) reservoir is governed by the tail race release of Neriyamangalam Hydro Electric Project and the uncontrolled flow downstream of Kallarkutty and Idukki dams. The water from LP reservoir is diverted through a water conductor system to the Powerhouse of LPHEP located at Karimanal on the left bank of Periyar river. After generating power, the water is released to Periyar river itself.
